„The Department of Defense (DoD) spent nearly $43 million to build a gas station in Afghanistan that should have only cost between $200,000 and $500,000.

Incredibly, overhead costs accounted for about 70 percent ($30 million) of total project expenditures, according to the report.  DoD is unable—or unwilling—to provide a justification.

DoD’s Task Force for Business and Stability Operations spent $42.7 million between 2011 and 2014 to construct a compressed natural gas (CNG) automobile filling station in Sheberghan, Afghanistan. (You may recall Sheberghan as the site of an unfinished, hazard-filled teacher training facility built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that we blogged about two years ago.) The station includes two dispensers/four hoses, one CNG trailer filling point, a car conversion center, an administrative office building, and gas compression and processing equipment. It is currently being operated by a private company, Qashqari Oil and Gas Services.

„As the anonymity software Tor approaches its tenth year online, it’s grown into a powerful, deeply-rooted privacy network.

Despite Tor’s origins as a research project at the US Navy and later at MIT, privacy-loving Germany has overtaken the US in total nodes, with France, the Netherlands, and Russia coming close behind.

And a new real-time map of that network illustrates just how widespread and global that network has become.

On Friday, freelance Sydney-based coder Luke Millanta launched Onionview, a web-based project that counts and tracks the geographic location of Tor nodes, the volunteer computers that bounce encrypted traffic around the web to offer Tor users anonymity. His goal, in part, was to show the network’s scale and how much it’s grown. “People think that Tor is 10 people running computers in their basements,” Millanta says. “When people see the map, they say ‘Holy shit. That’s what…

My 30 minutes with Stephie Pahlavi Zan

by Martin Lazarow

We hit and missed each other 3 times, but finally on the 4 th we got it together.

I had been working through the night and needed badly to do my shopping. I had  no food left in the refrigerator, but Stephie said lets get it together no questions asked. I  am at Starbucks on Fifth Avenue at Robinson.

I dropped everything threw on the clothes I had ( no washing in the last week ) and made my way out to meet in destiny.

Now I was not sure where Robinson was  and it was close to 10am. So I sent Stephie an e-mail that said 11.30 would do quite well.

I got to Starbucks early.

It turns out Stephie was there waiting in front with his Mac Book Pro. It took very little time to fully recognize each…

What’s Actually Happening When You Swipe your Card?

Valued Merchant Services

We use debit and credit cards every day, but do we really know how they work?

Credit Card

Take a moment and think about how many times per week you use your debit or credit card. Your answer will depend a lot on how old you are, as several studies have shown that younger people and the millennial generation are much more comfortable using plastic for small purchases under $10 or even $5. But regardless of your age, we’re guessing you swipe a card at least five times a week, and probably a lot more than that.

The convenience is unbeatable – for debit cards, the money withdrawn is nearly instantly debited from your linked checking account, saving tons of time over using the antiquated check and saving the hassle of dealing with change from using cash. For credit cards, the same convenience applies but instead of taking funds from your checking…
